Aaron Ramsdale: EPL Best save award winner

March 31, 2023

Aaron Ramsdale is the March Castrol Save of the Month winner.

Aaron Ramsdale is the winner of Castrol Save of the Month Award for March. He won the award for his brilliant save in Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.

The Arsenal goalkeeper was at his best on March 4 in what could be a season-defining game for his team.

By sprinting across his box to track a Dominic Solanke cross and getting his body in the way of Dango Ouattara’s subsequent side-footed effort, Ramsdale was forced to make a hero save to prevent what seemed to be an inevitable goal.

Reiss Nelson scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute to give the Gunners all three points after they had fallen behind by two goals earlier.

With that victory and resounding victories over Fulham and Crystal Palace since, Arsenal has opened up an eight point lead over the competition at the top of the Premier League standings going into the season’s final ten games.

Ramsdale is the third English goalkeeper to receive the Castrol Save of the Month honor in 2022–23. He is in the winner list after Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford,

Illan Meslier, Jose Sa, Alphonse Areola, David Raya, and Fraser Forster were also up for the March award.

When discussing his honor, he said: “The save allowed us to stay in the game and ultimately win it, so I’m very happy. To be fair, there have been a few months where I was nominated and better saves have won.

“With our goalkeeping coaches, we work a lot on spreads and one-on-ones. Dom Solanke was unable to intercept the ball when it crossed the box, so the winger grabbed it without hesitation. It managed to hit me in the forearm, so it was a nice save because I knew I needed to get on the end of it.

“Given the timing of the game, it’s likely better than it was. We were down 1-0, and it would have been challenging if the score had risen to 2-0. It was a crucial point in the game because of what happened with Reiss and the comeback, which made the save even more significant.”

Alphonse Areola of West Ham United, Jose Sa of Wolves, Ilian Meslier of Leeds United, Fraser Forster of Tottenham, and David Raya of Brentford were all defeated by our number one.
