Cadiz CF requested that the La Liga draw be suspended due to a refereeing controversy.
The Video Assistance Referee (VAR) is a controversial subject in sports, and La Liga is no exception. Technology-related incidents have sparked criticism on occasion. But possibly none more so than an incident that occurred during the final match between Cadiz CF and Elche CF,
The Andalusian team was leading 1-0 in a vital relegation six-pointer until Ezequiel Ponce equalized after 81 minutes. The goal was permitted by VAR, but subsequent replays revealed that the Argentine was offside.
Cadiz is furious by the decision and issued a statement a few days later. They are demanding that the game be replayed from the moment the goal was scored, although with the goal disallowed.
That has not yet occurred, and they have now issued another statement on their website stating that the problem has been notified to the TAD. Additionally, they have requested a temporary halt to the La Liga season while the problem is resolved.
It remains to be seen how their appeal is resolved, but if Cadiz gets relegated this season by two points or fewer, expect a tremendous outcry at the Spanish club.
