Cody Gakpo arrives in England for a medical with Liverpool ahead of a move from PSV Eindhoven
The Dutch club announced that Liverpool had agreed to sign Gakpo for between £35 million and £45 million.
“PSV and LFC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo,” a PSV statement said on Monday.
“The 23-year-old attacker will travel to England shortly to complete the transfer formalities.”
Manchester United were interested in Gakpo in the summer, but instead signed Antony from Ajax. But reports suggested they were considering a January move for the Netherlands international.
Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag stated, “We are aware we lost a striker, so I think we have to get a striker in, but it has to be the right one.”
In the summer, Southampton had an offer for Gakpo rejected, and Leeds were also interested in the 23-year-old.
Gakpo’s stock rose during the World Cup, where he scored three goals in five appearances before the Netherlands were eliminated on penalties to Argentina in the quarter-finals.
Prior to PSV’s statement, it was understood that Liverpool were in advanced talks with the Dutch club about the transfer. The Reds sought to bring in another attacking player following the long-term injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
The transfer window opens on Sunday, January 1 for clubs in England and Scotland, and if all of the necessary paperwork is completed, Gakpo could make his Liverpool debut against Brentford on January 2, live on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
According to Premier League rules, documents must be completed by midday on the last working day before a match. During this season, January 1 and 2 are considered working days.
