Haaland has been chosen the 2023 Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year after a remarkable, record-breaking first season with Manchester City.
Following a remarkable debut season at the Etihad, the City centre forward overwhelmingly won the coveted poll of the 400-strong FWA membership, gaining more than 80% of all votes cast.
Haaland follows in the footsteps of Club teammate Ruben Dias. Dias won the title in 2021, and former City player Raheem Sterling, who won it in 2019.
The forward is also just the fourth player in history to win the FWA in their debut season in England. He now joined Dias (2021), Gianfranco Zola (1997), and Jurgen Klinsmann (1995).
“To win the Football Writers’ Award in my first season in English football is an honour,” Haaland remarked. Every day, I work to improve myself, therefore it means a lot to me to be acknowledged in this way.
“I’ve enjoyed my time at City so far; my teammates are fantastic, and they give me chances to score goals.”
I’d want to thank everyone since I couldn’t have received this award without their help.
“I also owe a lot to Pep and the rest of the team here at City.” Everyone has been so nice to me since I started, and I’ve never worked with such talented people.
“I’d want to thank everyone who voted for me. It is an honor to have received this award. I’m now focused on finishing the season strongly and assisting City in winning trophies.”
It’s tough to overestimate Haaland’s effect since joining City from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
Erling Haaland: Breaking the Records
Haaland has emerged as one of the key players for a supremely talented City team that is vying for a third straight Premier League title, has advanced to an all-Manchester FA Cup final, and is scheduled to play Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final next Wednesday.
Along the process, Haaland has developed a particular bond with the Etihad supporters while setting a slew of incredible goal-scoring records that have seen him regularly rewrite history.
To far, Erling has scored 35 goals in 34 Premier League matches, breaking the long-standing record of 34. Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole hold the record for most Premier League goals scored in a single season with 34.
Haaland has overtaken Mo Salah’s 2017/18 Premier League record and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 2002/03 Premier League record. The Norwegian’s has now record of 51 goals in all competitions.
Earlier this season, Haaland broke Tommy Johnson’s long-standing record of 38 goals in a single season. Johnson achieved that record back in 1928-29.
Haaland also became the quickest and youngest player in UEFA Champions League history. He scored five goals in our 7-0 win against RB Leipzig in the second leg of our last-16 tie. It was his is sixth hat-trick of the season.
A dominating, athletic figure on the pitch, endowed with top talent, tremendous power, and excellent vision, Haaland has also exemplified Pep Guardiola’s squad’s collective passion and drive in what is building up to be another very spectacular campaign.
Erling is congratulated on this remarkable honor by everyone at Manchester City.
