The former Chelsea and Southampton player Oriol Romeu’s contract now includes a £400 million (£347 million) release clause.
Romeu graduated from Barcelona’s illustrious academy. But played just once in the league for the Catalan club before joining Chelsea in 2011.
After a single season at fellow LaLiga team Girona, Barcelona has now confirmed the midfielder’s return to the Nou Camp on a three-year agreement.
Catalan-born Romeu spent some time in the Espanyol academy before joining the Barcelona development team and making his Pep Guardiola debut in 2011.
A transfer to Chelsea followed months later, but it was with Southampton that he established himself as a Premier League regular, making 256 games in a seven-year spell at St Mary’s before leaving in 2022.
Romeu was a regular for Girona last season and will now play for Barcelona under former teammate Xavi.

FC Barcelona and Girona FC have agreed to the trade of midfielder Oriol Romeu. He will sign a three-year deal with the Club until 30 June 2026, with a buyout clause of €400 millions.
The details of Oriol Romeu’s debut with the first team will be the subject of indication soon by the Club.
Oriol Romeu, who joined FC Barcelona’s youth program in 2004, now rejoins the Club for the second time.
The midfielder advanced through the ranks to join the Barça Atlético team under Luis Enrique, gaining experience in Spain’s Second Division.
Romeu made his first team debut in 2010/11, appearing twice under Pep Guardiola.
