Mexican referee gets a 12-game suspension for violent behavior after losing his composure during a Liga MX match and kicking a player in the groin.
Following a request to use VAR, Fernando Hernandez arrived to knee Lucas Romero.
Liga MX disciplinary committee announced Hernandez’s punishment on Tuesday. It took place after the Mexican Football Federation confirmed an investigation into the incident.
They said in a statement: “Fernando Hernandez Gomez, referee of the game [Club America vs. Leon], is sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee with a 12-game suspension for violating Article 30, paragraph g) of the FMF’s [Mexican Football Federation] Regulation of Sanctions, by engaging in violent conduct against a player.”
During the ten minutes of mayhem in the second half, six players received yellow cards. Along with this, both side managers Nicolas Larcamon and Fernando Ortiz got dismissal from the game after a confrontation.
Romero received a two-game suspension for “violating the principles of sportsmanship and fair play, through actions toward match officials,” according to the disciplinary committee, while Larcamon and Ortiz received two-game suspensions for “violent conduct.”

The Referees Commission has informed the Mexican Football Federation that an investigation will be launched into the incidents involving the referee Fernando Hernández in the América vs. León [match], which corresponds to Matchday 13 of the Liga MX. The resolution will be made available for public comment.
Romero initially urged that Hernandez not punish the official after learning that the incident was “unintentional” from Hernandez.
‘I’m not asking for anything [punishment], he said it was unintentional.
‘But they respect us as much as we respect them on the field because they are the authority.’
Leon scored a last-minute equalizer through former Arsenal player Joel Campbell to tie the game at 2-2.
Leon remains third in the table, one point ahead of fourth-placed Club America.
