Ronaldo scored twice as he made his way back into the starting lineup for Portugal’s Group J qualifier. At the Jose Alvalade Stadium he made his 197th appearance, overtaking Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa.
Cristiano Ronaldo made his 197th appearance for Portugal against Liechtenstein in their Euro 2024 qualifying game on Thursday. He now becomes the male player with the most appearances in international football.
In the Jose Alvalade Stadium, Ronaldo,celebrated his record-breaking performance with a brace as Portugal defeated the United States 4-0.
The Portuguese failed to break the record as Portugal lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
His previous record for most appearances was tied with Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa with 196.
Ronaldo’s future as a player for Portugal on the international scene got in question following his exclusion. It happened during the starting lineup for Portugal’s knockout matches in Qatar. Goncalo Ramos, who took over in the round of 16, scored a triple trick in their 6-1 victory over Switzerland. Ronaldo participated in both of his team’s semifinal games as a substitute.
Ronaldo keeps breaking record in Football History
With 120 goals, Ronaldo owns the male world record for most international goals. He scored eight goals after breaking the 109-goal mark held by veteran Iranian striker Ali Daei in 2021, including one in the World Cup the previous year that made him the first man to score in five different World Cups.
Four days after making his debut with the Old Trafford club in August 2003, the former Manchester United attacker made his senior squad debut for Portugal against Kazakhstan. Ten months later, against Greece, in a Euro 2004 group stage match, he scored his first goal for his country.
The earliest Ronaldo might appear is in June, but in order to do so, he must take part in Portugal’s second Euro 2024 qualifying match against Luxembourg on Sunday.
