Staff Score Predictions for Clemson’s Matchup Against South Carolina

Here’s what we’re thinking for Clemson football’s rivalry matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Staff Score Predictions for Clemson’s Matchup Against South Carolina

Clemson and South Carolina meet again in the Palmetto Bowl, and while neither team’s season followed the script they hoped for back in August, the rivalry still closes the regular season with plenty at stake. The Tigers enter at 6–5, salvaging bowl eligibility with a decisive 45–10 win over Furman in Week 13, a game that featured Cade Klubnik’s 159-yard, two-touchdown performance in what was likely his final appearance in Death Valley. Clemson leaned on its ground game as well, piling up 219 rushing yards and finishing with 456 yards of offense in a much-needed rebound.

South Carolina arrives at 4–7 after a dominant 51–7 showing against Coastal Carolina, highlighted by LaNorris Sellers accounting for four total touchdowns and 356 yards. The Gamecocks haven’t found the season they expected either, but they’ve shown enough flashes to believe they can make things difficult for their in-state rival.

This will be the 122nd meeting between the programs, with Clemson holding a 73-44-4 edge and owning five straight wins at Williams-Brice Stadium. Still, South Carolina has taken two of the last three overall, adding a little extra tension to a matchup that rarely needs any. Here’s what we’re thinking ahead of Clemson vs. South Carolina.

Turri: Clemson 21, South Carolina 20

It feels like this one will impaxt the Clemson legacy of a few players. Keeping this short and sweet. Clemson is the more talented team and Dabo Swinney won’t let them go out against South Carolina and completely tarnish their reputation.

Holley: Clemson 28, South Carolina 21

Here’s something fun about Dabo Swinney: he almost never loses to the same team in back-to-back years. Clemson is playing its best football of the season, although it’s too-little, too-late to matter outside of the state series against South Carolina.

Speaking of the Gamecocks, they’ve lost seven of their last nine games in a season that, like Clemson’s, started to sputter in September. The Tigers look rejuvenated a bit. Cade Klubnik has played well recently, and I think Clemson players and Swinney remember last year’s disappointment against the Gamecocks in Death Valley and will be more motivated to win this game.

I also just think Clemson has more talent. I’ll take the Tigers to win again in Columbia.
