Amara Diouf’s qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations at the age of 15 years and 94 days was a watershed moment in African football history. His successes were enhanced by the fact that he was the youngest player in Senegal’s senior national team history.

His journey to this historic event began with a remarkable performance in the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria in 2023, when he finished as the competition’s top scorer with five goals. Aliou Cisse recognized his talent and offered him the ball in the 70th minute against Rwanda.

The youthful sensation came close to scoring a spectacular goal in the 81st minute to conclude a well-executed move, but Fiacre Ntwari’s stunning save denied him.

Senegal’s TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations title squad, which includes a star-studded lineup, is on its way to Cote d’Ivoire. This is only the beginning for the young star.

Senegal is following Spain’s lead by starting 15-year-old Diouf against Rwanda. Spain also chose 16-year-old Barcelona starlet Lamine Yamal in their 2024 Euros qualifier against Georgia.

The debut has unavoidably generated comparisons to Sadio Mane, another member of Generation Foot and a former Liverpool player. Although it is still too early to draw any conclusions, Diouf’s early exposure to senior football has surely prepared him for a successful career.
