Angel Di Maria scored directly from a corner kick to give Benfica the lead in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League Group D game at RB Salzburg.
Di Maria’s whipped delivery from the right evaded multiple outfield players inside a crowded six-yard box before landing in the back of the net with a slight touch off the goalkeeper’s right hand.
The goal was then the subject of a lengthy VAR review to look for a possible foul by Nicolas Otamendi.
Due to technical difficulties, on-field referee Daniel Siebert was unable to hear what the VAR was saying.
However, after plugging in a pair of headphones near the sidelines, Siebert was able to confirm to the players that Di Maria’s Olimpico goal was valid.
Angel Di Maria scored a spectacular goal
Di Maria’s first goal came in the 32nd minute.
Benfica added a second goal just before halftime when Rafa Silva drilled home from 14 yards after receiving a through-pass from Di Maria.
Luka Sucic scored for Salzburg on 57 minutes, but Arthur Cabral sealed the 3-1 victory in added time.
With the win, Benfica finished third in Group D, one point ahead of Salzburg in goals scored.
As a result, Di Maria and company will continue their European adventure in the Europa League this season.
