Antoine Griezmann was named the March LaLiga Santander Player of the Month. The 32-year-old was instrumental in Atletico’s nine-point victory in what was a difficult month for Los Colchoneros.
The award goes to the French star after a string of sensational performances that saw his team, Atletico Madrid, win every single game in March.
Antoine Griezmann scored a spectacular long-range strike and also assisted as Atletico Madrid thrashed Sevilla FC 6-1 at the Civitas Metropolitano. Diego Simeone’s team then went on to win 1-0 away at Girona FC, with Griezmann driving proceedings, before finishing the month with a 3-0 win over Valencia, with Griezmann opening the scoring.
This month, Griezmann led Atlético to victories over Sevilla, Girona, and Valencia, helping the Colchoneros maintain their top-three position. First, in the club’s 6-1 demolition of Sevilla on March 4, the 32-year-old produced one of his best-ever performances, scoring one goal, assisting another, and recording secondary assists on two other goals.
Griezmann played the full 90 minutes at Montilivi nine days later, laying on five shot-creating actions as Atlético beat Girona at the death. The Frenchman returned to lead the Rojiblancos to a 3-0 victory over Valencia just before the international break, scoring the opening goal midway through the first half — his third goal in his last four LaLiga shots on target.
Antoine Griezmann is the Laliga Santander Player of the Month
This is Griezmann’s seventh Player of the Month award in what has become a decorated playing career in Spain, albeit one that (somehow) still lacks a league title. Griezmann leads LaLiga with eight assists, one shy of tying his career high, and he could end up as the league’s assists champion for the first time.
Furthermore, Griezmann’s 17 total goal contributions rank second among all players, trailing only FC Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski by three.
Griezmann has been outstanding all season and, like many of his Atlético teammates, has risen to new heights since the winter World Cup. The Rojiblancos are on a 10-game unbeaten streak in LaLiga, and with arguably the league’s easiest remaining fixture list, they will feel confident in their pursuit of second place and an automatic berth in the Supercopa de Espaa in 2024. With 12 games remaining, Atletico Madrid is five points behind rival Real Madrid.
