The two clubs were tied at 2-2 after the first leg at Emirates Stadium, but Joshua Kimmich’s second-half header was enough to earn a 3-2 aggregate victory for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Bayern have thus advanced to the competition’s final four, joining Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, while Arsenal were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Mikel Arteta’s squad suffers its second consecutive setback, coming off a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

Arsenal was defeated by professional Bayern in Munich.

England captain Harry Kane had a half-chance in the fourth minute of the game, but he turned a Kimmich cross wide of the goal, giving Arsenal an early warning at the Allianz Arena, before the forward shot over from distance less than two minutes later.

Gabriel Martinelli then fired wide from long range in Arsenal’s first chance of the game, but opportunities were few and far between in the period that followed, with both teams enjoying periods of dominated possession.

In the 24th minute, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya produced a smart save to deny the dangerous Jamal Musiala, before Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was called into action to keep out Martin Odegaard and Martinelli in quick succession down the other end of the field, as Arsenal looked menacing.

Neuer also saved a header from Kai Havertz late in the first period, but a cagey first session ended goalless, with neither club willing to take any chances in the first 45 minutes of the second leg.

Bayern hit the post twice in the first minute of the second period, with a Leon Goretzka header and a thunderous Raphael Guerreiro shot, as Arsenal came dangerously close to losing the tie.

However, the home team broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute of the game, thanks to Kimmich, who smashed a header into the back of the net from a Guerrero cross.

In the 66th minute, Leroy Sane blasted over the crossbar at the far post as Bayern sought a second goal, while Arsenal struggled to create any meaningful opportunities.

Raya was forced into action late on to deny Musiala, and the Bundesliga champions were putting all of the pressure on Arsenal, looking for a second to end any dreams of a late comeback.

But there was no late drama at the Allianz, with Kimmich’s flying.

Arsenal’s focus will now return to the Premier League, as they prepare to travel to Molineux on Saturday evening for a potentially difficult match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Bayern, meantime, will return to Bundesliga play on Saturday away to Union Berlin, and Tuchel’s side is now tied for second place with Stuttgart after Bayer Leverkusen won the title last weekend.

Arsenal now focuses solely on the Premier League.
