The winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2022, Karim Benzema, became the first Real Madrid player since Ferenc Puskas in 1963 to score a hat-trick in El Clasico at the Camp Nou.
With a 1-0 advantage after the first leg of the semi-final, Barcelona was attempting to win its fourth straight El Clasico this season in order to advance to the Copa del Rey final. Barcelona, however, crumbled under the weight of a 4-1 overall defeat to Real Madrid.
Barcelona dominated the first half of the second leg before Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr broke the tie. The Brazilian winger put Real Madrid ahead in the final minutes of the first half.
Karim Benzema: Creating Real Madrid History
Real Madrid maintained their lead when Benzema scored five minutes into the second half after receiving a pass from Luka Modric. Soon after, Vinicius was fouled in the area, and Benzema converted the 58th-minute penalty to make it 3-0.
Real Madrid were too much for Barcelona to handle, and Benzema was unstoppable as they attempted a counterattack. Vinicius once more provided the assist for Benzema in the 82nd minute, enabling the French international to complete his hat-trick. Just a few days prior, Benzema scored a hat-trick in Madrid’s 6-0 humiliation of Real Valladolid.
As they attempt to win the Copa del Rey for the twentieth time, Real Madrid will take on Osasuna. After defeating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 overall, Osasuna advanced to the championship game.
