C Ronaldo: Ronaldo may not play for Portugal against Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarter-finals. Portugal, which thrashed Switzerland 6-1 in the Round of 16, did not include Cristiano Ronaldo after coach Fernando Santos decided to bench the player.

Gonçalo Ramos is likely to start in the first 11 in tomorrow’s game against Morocco. Given Cristiano Ronaldo’s enormous weight in the National Team, it will always be a difficult decision for the technical team led by Fernando Santos, but the young Benfica player’s three goals put him one step ahead of the Portugal captain. As José Peseiro stated in an interview with A BOLA in Qatar, “it is not easy to put Cristiano back on the bench, just as it is not easy to put Gonçalo on the bench now.”

Gonçalo Ramos scores while also doing something that Cristiano is finding more difficult at the moment: playing outside the area, promoting diagonals, and bringing opponents close to him. However, there is another intriguing question. In what ways, with Morocco being a team that is hyperprotective of its own goal, would having a man up front who is strong and powerful in the air be important, if not decisive? It will always be important, but it may be even more important to have someone more mobile up front, as Gonçalo Ramos is unquestionably compared to (current) Ronaldo.

On the other hand, if the captain enters after, say, 60 minutes, with the opponents already tired and less mentally focused, his qualities will have more room to be decisive.
