Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool as the Reds lose hope for title race

Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool 1-0 in Sunday’s Premier League encounter at Anfield, with Eberechi Eze scoring the only goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s team was hoping to rebound from their 3-0 Europa League home loss to Atalanta BC on Thursday, but they lost again in front of their own fans.

Eze scored the goal in the 14th minute, leaving Liverpool in third place in the Premier League table, two points behind champions Manchester City, while Palace moved up to 14th, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Palace had a half-chance in the first minute, with Eze finding space in a dangerous area, but his effort was saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who had returned from injury.

As expected, Liverpool began to gain possession in the following stretch, but Palace’s pace and movement made them threatening on the counterattack.

Darwin Nunez taxed Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s reactions with an eighth-minute strike, but Palace stunned Anfield with the first goal in the 14th minute.

Tyrick Mitchell’s low pass set up Eze’s close-range goal, leaving Liverpool’s defenders hidden.

Palace came perilously close to extending their advantage in the 18th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta sprinted clear before pushing the ball past Alisson and into the goal, but Andrew Robertson just about cleared the ball off the line to prevent a second goal.

Daniel Munoz took down Luis Diaz inside the area in the twenty-fourth minute, awarding Liverpool a penalty claim. However, the referee denied the call, and VAR concurred.

The home side came close to tying the game in the 27th minute after Palace failed to deal with a corner and the ball fell for Wataru Endo, but his shot hit the crossbar.
