Cunha Transfer: Wolves have confirmed the loan signing of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, with a €40 million obligation to buy.

Wolves confirmed the loan signing of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid

Wolves defeated local rivals Aston Villa to secure the Brazilian’s signature. The Wanderers announces the arrival of Cunha’s on Christmas Day, initially on loan until the end of the season. Julen Lopetegui’s first signing since taking over at Molineux is him.

Matheus joined Atletico Madrid in 2021 but has yet to make an impression under Diego Simeone. This season, he has fallen further down the pecking order, making 17 appearances without scoring, resulting in his exclusion from Brazil’s World Cup squad. He appeared to fire a parting shot at Simeone earlier this week, writing about the value of “feeling loved” on social media.

Cunha will be Wolves’ first signing under new manager Julen Lopetegui, with the Midlands club currently bottom of the Premier League after 15 games.

Wolves have scored eight Premier League goals this season, three fewer than any other team.

More about the player

Cunha was born in Brazil and developed as a footballer in South America before making his way to Europe via a move to Swiss side Sion, where he settled quickly as a teenager, finishing with 10 goals and eight assists in 32 games.

After only one season, the attacker moved on to Germany and RB Leipzig, but not before helping Brazil win gold at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, scoring in the final against Spain as the South Americans successfully defended their title.

That honor was the latest triumph in the youngster’s international career. Cunha is the Brazilian under-23s’ all-time leading goal scorer, with 21 goals in 23 games, including the tournament-winning goal at the 2019 Toulon Tournament.
