England vs Iran: Gareth Southgate’s England kicked off their World Cup campaign in Qatar with a 6-2 victory over Iran.

England thrashed Iran 6-2 in their World Cup opener on Monday, with two goals from Bukayo Saka and goals from Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling, before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish closed up the thrashing.

England come close to taking the lead in the Group B opening, with Harry Maguire hitting against the crossbar, but Bellingham, head in a Luke Shaw cross in the 35th minute. The whites extended their lead eight minutes later when Maguire rose highest from a corner to head down for Saka to score.

The England captain ‘Harry Maguire’ was replaced in the second half. Gareth Southgate may hope that his slight limp after the game is nothing to worry about.

In first-half stoppage time, Sterling headed in captain Harry Kane’s cross before Saka surprised Iran’s defense and made it 4-0 in the 62nd minute. Iran’s Mehdi Taremi however scored three minutes later. But Rashford hit the net and made it 5-1. Grealish, who came off the bench, also scored England’s sixth in the last minute. In the dying seconds, Taremi scored a consolation second goal for Iran from the penalty spot.

Gareth Southgate isn’t overjoyed with England’s resounding victory over Iran, and sees room for improvement ahead of the match against USA in their next group clash.
