The Premier League’s Golden Boot winner had already secured another match ball by the 40-minute mark as Pep Guardiola’s team seemed to run away with the tie, but Jordan Clark gave Rob Edwards’ side hope with a spectacular effort before the break.

Early in the second period, Clark scored his second goal of the game, setting up an incredible Luton comeback. The unstoppable, Erling Haaland then finished with a five-star effort, and Mateo Kovacic also temporarily stole the show.

While still fielding a strong XI, Guardiola gave opportunities to Jack Grealish, Matheus Nunes, and Stefan Ortega at Kenilworth Road. However, it was two of the usual suspects who teamed up for the Citizens’ opener after only four minutes.

Nunes contributed significantly to the buildup, flicking a wonderful-pass past a sprinting KDB on the left side of the box.

Luton’s response to falling behind was encouraging, and Carlton Morris appeared to test Ortega from close range just three minutes after Haaland’s goal, but Nathan Ake was on there to make a fantastic save.

The Hatters’ brief period of promise was short-lived, however, as another combination from City’s lethal duo resulted in the goal rippling for the second time in the 18th minute, when Haaland initially intercepted a long pass from Ederson and sent the ball to De Bruyne.

The Norwegian dashed beyond the Luton backline, latching onto an inch-perfect through ball from De Bruyne and firing through Tim Krul’s knees to put the holders in cruise control.

Only Krul’s legs prevented Haaland from scoring a 25-minute hat-trick as the Scandinavian star sneaked in behind the Hatters’ defence once more, and the Dutchman rescued his teammates again on the half-hour mark, save a De Bruyne volley and a Haaland follow-up shot.

Both coaches had to make last-minute substitutions as the first half drew to an end.

For Luton Town, Amari’i Bell, an injured defender for Luton, took Joe Johnson’s place.

In comparison, Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku replaced Jack Grealish.
