Frenkie de Jong will miss Euro 2024 because of failing to recover from an ankle injury.
De Jong has established himself as a regular in the Netherlands’ midfield since making his senior international debut in 2018, winning 54 caps and scoring two goals.
However, he has not played since suffering an ankle injury in Barcelona’s Clasico loss to Real Madrid on April 21.
De Jong participated in non-contact training on Sunday, according to Oranje coach Ronald Koeman, although he is unlikely to face Poland in their Group D opening later this week.
Koeman also stated that De Jong’s inclusion in the squad would be reassessed if he appeared to be unable to participate during the group stage, and it has now been confirmed that he would miss the tournament.
In a post to X immediately after defeating Iceland 4-0 in their final pre-tournament friendly, the Netherlands stated: “Frenkie de Jong will not participate in Euro 2024.”
“We are with you, Frenkie.”
In his post-match press conference on Monday, Koeman criticized his previous team for how they handled De Jong’s injury.
“He has a history of ankle injuries,” Koeman explained. “Barcelona took a risk with him.”
“We have nothing left at this point.”

De Jong made 30 appearances in all competitions as the Blaugrana had a terrible 2023-24 season, finishing significantly behind Madrid at the top of LaLiga and exiting the Champions League in the final eight to Paris Saint-Germain.
Tijjani Reijnders will likely to start in a three-man midfield at the Euros, with Jerdy Schouten and Joey Veerman.
Teun Koopmeiners of the Netherlands also suffered a thigh injury during the warm-up for Monday’s match, forcing him to retire from the starting lineup.
On Sunday, the Oranje will face Poland in their Group D opener in Hamburg, followed by a heavyweight showdown with France and a match against Ralf Rangnick’s in-form Austria team.
