Gareth Southgate is considering leaving England after their World Cup defeat

Southgate is thinking about stepping down as England manager.

England were eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday by France in Saturday. After losing, Southgate wants time and space to make the right decision.

Southgate stated following England’s quarter-final exit: “These tournaments exhaust you, and I need time to reflect. That’s what we’ve done after every tournament, and it’s the right thing to do.”

He continued: “I don’t want to look back four or five months and realize I made the wrong decision. It is far too important for everyone to get it wrong.”

Southgate has never hidden his desire to return to club management, and if he were to leave England, he would like to join a top Champions League club in England or Europe.

The FA and England players want Southgate to stay until at least the 2024 European Championships in Germany. Southgate signed a two-year contract extension last year, which will expire after Euro 2024.

Southgate led England to their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years in Russia in 2018, losing in extra-time to Croatia, before losing on penalties to Italy in the Euro 2020 final in the summer of 2021.
