Inigo Martinez has agreed to join Barcelona on a free transfer from Athletic Club.

The Blaugrana have long been linked with a move for the 32-year-old defender. He has appeared in 357 La Liga games for Athletic and Basque rivals Real Sociedad.

Martinez has agreed to terms with Barcelona and will sign a two-year contract shortly.

Inigo Martinez and FC Barcelona have come to a deal that will allow him to join the team when his deal with Athletic Club expires, according to a statement from the club.

“The player will sign a two-year contract that will expire on June 30, 2025, with a 400 million euro release clause.”

“The Club will provide further details about Inigo Martinez’s presentation as a new first-team player in due course.”

Martinez will be Barcelona’s second acquisition of the summer, following the free transfer of Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan. They defeated Arsenal in their pursuit of the German’s signature.

With Athletico Paranaense, Barça had agreed to sign 18-year-old striker Vitor Roque, who would move to Catalonia in January 2024.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed that the club has received bids for eight players, while discussions with Tottenham regarding the permanent transfer of Clement Lenglet are ongoing.

The 32-year-old defender, born in Ondarroa (the Basque Country), joins Barça with a lot of first-team experience. During his time with Real Sociedad and Athletic Club, he played over 350 LaLiga games and scored 22 goals.
