Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly ready to push for Joel Matip’s contract to be extended.

The Liverpool backline has seen few changes in recent years, with only Ibrahima Konate considered a new addition.

Jarell Quansah, who was promoted from the academy ranks, has provided additional competition, but Klopp has opted against making significant changes to an area that has occasionally been criticized.

With Virgil van Dijk and Matip now 32 years old, and Joe Gomez recently recognized for his versatility over a regular spot in the center, Klopp will eventually have to consider at least one more young player.

At one point this summer, it was assumed that Liverpool would be more than willing to part ways with Matip, who is getting on in years and continues to sustain injuries on a regular basis.

Instead, the Cameroonian stayed at Anfield and was regarded as first choice in 2023-24, making nine Premier League starts and one substitute appearance.

Matip suffered a knee injury against Fulham on Saturday and is now expected to be out for the foreseeable future, according to Klopp, who provided a pessimistic update on his recovery timetable.

However, according to Football Insider, this will not have an impact on how Klopp and the club’s transfer team perceive Matip.

According to the report, Matip will be offered a new contract to stay at the Merseyside giants beyond the end of this season.

While the report does not specify a contract length, it is likely to be until 2025, with options to extend beyond that date.

It was reported earlier this week that Klopp was willing to postpone Liverpool’s search for a new central defender until the summer transfer window.

That alleged stance comes at a time when Liverpool has the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding 14 goals in 14 games.

In Matip’s absence, Klopp is expected to recall Konate when Liverpool face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night.
