Marcos Alonso will not join Manchester United this summer after rejecting down a two-year contract and will instead stay at Barcelona.
The 32-year-old surfaced as a potential replacement for Luke Shaw, who sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out for several months.
According to Marca, United approached Barcelona last week about signing the defender on a season-long loan.
The Red Devils offered Alonso a two-year contract extension, which would have allowed him to stay at Old Trafford once his current agreement with Barcelona expired at the conclusion of the season.
However, the former Chelsea left-back passed down the chance to return to the Premier League, preferring to see out the final year of his contract with the Blaugrana.
While Alejandro Balde is the first-choice left-back at the Nou Camp, Alonso is content to compete for his spot after Jordi Alba moved for Inter Miami.
Alonso played in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, and Chelsea, where he won the title in 2017.
During his six seasons at Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard won five additional major championships, including the FA Cup in 2018 and the Europa League the following season.
Alonso was a member of the team that won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup in 2021.
Marc Cuccurella, the Spaniard’s successor at Stamford Bridge, is also on United’s radar, as are Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon and Brentford’s Rico Henry.
Marcos Alonso Transfer News: Manchester United offered Alonso a two-year deal last week
On Monday, Mail Sport reported that United had conducted preliminary inquiries into Henry’s condition and his availability.
Since joining Brentford from Walsall in 2016, the 26-year-old has been a steady and impressive player.
He missed just one Premier League game last season and has started all three games for Brentford this season.
It is understood that luring Henry away from Brentford this late in the transfer window would be difficult, and that they may be more receptive to considering his exit after the end of the season.
Henry is also not cheap, and he is under contract with Brentford until at least 2026.
Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s replacement, is also out for the next few months, leaving Erik Ten Hag with few choices at left-back.
Diogo Dalot replaced Shaw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Alvaro Fernandez, 20, the only left-back in Ten Hag’s side.
