Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez fired up and gave Argentina a wondeful win to head to the finals. Messi scored against the run of play from the penalty spot. The incident appeared after Man City striker Alvarez earned a debatable penalty after colliding with Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

With that goal, the 35-year-old surpassed Gabriel Batistuta to become Argentina’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup finals, with 11 goals.

Croatia crumbled after the opener, and Argentina countered five minutes later after comical defending, as Alvarez doubled their lead after carrying the ball from his own half.

Messi took matters into his own hands to put the game out of reach. His magical of a moment down the right to beat Josko Gvardiol before setting up Alvarez for Argentina’s third goal.

Argentina lastly appeared in the World Cup final in 2014. They were defeated by Germany, but they have not won the trophy since Diego Maradona led his country to victory in Mexico in 1986.
