Pau Torres is likely to join Aston Villa after negotiations with Villarreal proceeded this week.
Unai Emery is keen to add many high-quality players to his roster this summer in order to continue constructing a side capable of contending on all four fronts next season: the Premier League, the UEFA Conference League, and both domestic cup competitions.
The Villa manager is ready to welcome Torres as his second summer acquisition, following Youri Tielemans, who came on a free transfer from Leicester City.
Torres, who has a year left on his contract, is now ready to quit his childhood club. He joined Villarreal when he was five years old and has turned down several offers to go on to bigger teams that offered him more lucrative contracts.
Pau Torres moving to Villa from Spain
Torres is a 26-year-old left-sided defender who can build from the back for Spain. Torres’ arrival from Real Betis, like Alex Moreno’s in January, might have a similarly transformative effect.
This summer, Villa hope to bring in at least five additional players, including Torres. Emery also wants to add a right-back, a midfielder, a winger, and a striker to his squad. A goalkeeper might also be pursued, given that Villa may play more than 50 games next season if they advance in the cup tournaments.
Emery has identified striker positions as a crucial area that has to be upgraded this summer, as he seeks to replace Dany Ings, who left in January, and to add a wide player due to a lack of choices in his squad. Villa have been disappointed in their attempts to bring in talent in both areas, with Nico Williams and Federico Chiesa reportedly refusing to join.
Aston Villa was also targeting in Marco Asensio. However, after leaving Real Madrid, he plans to join PSG on a free transfer. Villa have plenty of time to pursue their goals, but Emery is definitely searching for at least one top-tier addition for this part of the field.
Despite Tielemans’ arrival, another midfielder will be sought. Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson are free to leave the club this summer, while Leander Dendoncker will be surplus to requirements if Villa can sign another holding midfielder.
A number of Premier League teams have an interest in the USMNT captain. One of the names under consideration by Villa is Tyler Adams.
