Pedri is apparently set to miss the rest of the 2023-24 season as well as the European Championship this summer.
Pedri sobbed after being replaced late in the first half against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday due to a hamstring injury.
The midfield player is expected to miss the balance of the season with Barcelona, Bar Canaletes writes. He was initially expected to be out for five to six weeks. Additionally, the 21-year-old will not be able to play for Spain in Euro 2024.
The Catalan squad is aiming to persuade Pedri that surgery would be the best option for his long-term fitness.
Throughout his career at Barcelona, the midfielder has dealt with a variety of hamstring ailments, with his longest layoff occurring between September 2021 and January 2022.
Meanwhile, Pedri has only made 24 appearances this season, missing time in the first half due to a hamstring injury.
Pedri | Playing Career
The Spaniard joined Barcelona from Las Palmas in July 2020. He has made 133 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals and assisting 12 times.
Pedri’s absence will be a severe setback for Barcelona and their hopes for the rest of the season, as he will also be a major absentee for Spain at this summer’s tournament.
Barcelona manager Xavi told reporters after the match against Athletic: “He trained extremely well this week, he was at a very high level, and it is a tragedy. He was in excellent physical condition, and he did everything possible to heal and be well.
“We have taken care of everything, all the details, and this has happened again, but these are football situations and he will come back stronger.”
Frenkie de Jong also suffered an ankle injury during the game. The Dutch midfielder is also likely to miss a significant amount of time.
“It is unfortunate that two very important footballers have been injured.” We’ll know more between now and tomorrow [when he talked after the game], but it doesn’t look good, and I’m sure the team has been damaged by the injuries,” Xavi remarked.
“They are both affected; we are saddened by all that has happened.”
“Especially by the two absences, which I believe will be for matches. Unfortunately, today is a sad day.”
Gavi and Balde are both long-term Barcelona absentees, missing the rest of the season with knee and hamstring ailments, respectively.
