The Chelsea player, 28, returned to England on Sunday after his family home in Surrey was broken into.

Sterling‘s representative stated that he left the England camp to “prioritize the wellbeing” of his three young children.

He did not play in England’s 3-0 win over Senegal in the last 16, but he is expected to return to the squad in Al Wakrah on Friday.

Sterling, who has 81 international caps, scored in England’s 6-2 World Cup opener against Iran.

He also started the goalless draw against the United States before being an unused substitute in England’s 3-0 win over Wales, which saw them qualify for the knockout stages as group winners.

According to his representative, Sterling’s family was at home on Saturday when “armed intruders” broke in. The former Liverpool and Manchester City forward was said to be “shaken” and concerned for the well-being of his children.

Sterling’s teammate Kalvin Phillips says the incident has worried other England players as well.

“I think once one player goes through it, there’s always a thought in the back of your mind that it could happen to you or to someone else,” Manchester City midfielder Phillips said.

“It’s not a good feeling to be so far away from home, especially when you have family there. We can’t do much about it, but Raheem feels well enough to rejoin us, which makes us very happy. We’re glad his family is doing well.”

He also stated that he was not aware of any discussions with the FA about improving security.

Statement from the police

Surrey police said in a statement that they were investigating a burglary report after the occupants of the house returned to find jewelry and watches had been stolen, but that no threats of violence were made.

The police said on Wednesday that the case is unrelated to another attempted burglary in the same village.

There have been no arrests in connection with Sterling’s home invasion.

The FA has yet to reveal what it was told about the incident prior to Sterling’s departure.
