Guerreiro completed his move to Bayern Munich after leaving Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer.

Raphael Guerreiro, the former Borussia Dortmund full-back, has agreed to terms with Bayern Munich on a three-year contract. Guerreiro will join Bayern Munich on a free transfer when his contract with BVB ends at the end of the month.

Borussia Dortmund wanted to keep Guerreiro and offered him a two-year contract extension. But he declined the offer, with Sebastian Kehl announcing earlier this month that he preferred a longer-term contract. The Portuguese international has now opted to join Bayern Munich, who finished second in the Bundesliga to the Black and Yellows on goal difference in May.

Guerreiro’s choice to join Bayern Munich after seven years at Borussia Dortmund is undoubtedly contentious. He stated that when the call from Bayern arrived, he made the choice to join them immediately.

“When I got the call from FC Bayern, I made a quick decision.” It’s an honor for me to be able to play for such a prestigious club, and I hold Thomas Tuchel in high respect from our time together at Dortmund. I will do all in my power to ensure that we win as many championships as possible. That is FC Bayern’s ideology.”

The 29-year-old made 224 appearances for BVB and has more assists than any other player in the just ended Bundesliga season. He is now the first player to switch from Dortmund to Munich since Mats Hummels in 2016. Three years later, Hummels returned to BVB.

Borussia Dortmund have already replaced Raphael Guerreiro with Ramy Bensebaini, who signed a four-year contract with the club earlier this month. Bensebaini will battle for the starting left-back position at BVB next season alongside Julian Ryerson.
