The Red Devils are likely to make an official approach to Chelsea over the acquisition of midfielder Mason Mount.
Internal talks over a potential bid are said to be ongoing, with Mount one of a handful of midfielders United are looking at in what is considered as a key position this summer.
Personal terms are not likely to be a concern if an agreement can be reached.
Mount’s Chelsea contract expires in June 2024. Manchester United have enquired about his availability this season and have been encouraged by his tricky situation at Stamford Bridge.
Mount last played for Chelsea in April before suffering pelvic surgery, which forced him to miss the balance of the season. He looked to be saying his goodbyes after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United, which finished a disappointing season.
Since breaking into the main team, the 24-year-old Chelsea academy alumnus has won the Champions League and Club World Cup. He also appeared in three consecutive FA Cup finals, as well as their League Cup final loss to Liverpool on penalties last year.
Mount has made 36 appearances for England, including a start in the Euro 2020 final loss to Italy.

Manchester United keeping high interest in signing Mason Mount for less than £60 million.
At the age of 18, Mount got a call up to Chelsea’s first team. He had previously made his debut for the club’s under-18 team in 2014, at the age of 15. He also featured routinely for the club’s under-21 team by 2016. Mount scored 10 goals in 30 appearances for the club’s winning U18 Premier League campaign in 2016-17. By 2017, he won two FA Youth Cups, the UEFA Youth League, and the Chelsea Academy Player of the Year award.
At the same time, Manchester United and Chelsea differ on the value of the 24-year-old midfielder’s move.
If Mount indicates a desire to leave Manchester United, the Londoners are willing to bargain. According to reports, the midfielder has already signed to terms with the Red Devils.
Mount’s current contract with Chelsea expires in June 2024.
