Tim Southee to miss the first ODI World Cup match

Tim Southee of New Zealand will miss the first World Cup match and possibly more due to a thumb injury, according to stand-in captain Tom Latham. Kane Williamson, the team’s regular captain, is also out with a knee injury. Southee underwent surgery three weeks ago for a thumb dislocation injury.

Tim Southee of New Zealand will miss the World Cup opener against defending champions England and maybe several further games due to a thumb injury, according to stand-in captain Tom Latham on Wednesday. When the Black Caps hit the field in Ahmedabad, site of the world’s largest cricket stadium, on Thursday, they will also be without their regular skipper, Kane Williamson, who is recovering from a knee injury.

While Williamson batted in the team’s first warm-up game and fielded in the second, Southee has yet to make his India debut.

“No Kane and no Tim,” Latham told reporters before the game. “He (Southee) is unavailable for selection,” he added. He’s doing well; it’s been about two weeks since surgery, so fingers crossed he stays doing well. It’s a bit of a day-to-day thing. But I’m hoping he’ll be accessible sooner rather than later.”
