Wayne Rooney agreed to become new coach of Birmingham City

According to reports, Wayne Rooney is likely to become the new head coach of Birmingham City.

The 37-year-old just stepped down as manager of D.C. United after the team failed to make the MLS playoffs. Rooney elected to return to the United States in 2022 after spending two years with D.C. United near the end of his playing career.

Rooney took over as caretaker manager at Derby County in 2020. He replaced Phillip Cocu, before quitting from playing to take up the job full-time.

He guided the Rams to Championship survival in his first season in command, but financial difficulties saw the team deducted 12 points during the 2021/22 season and demoted to League One. Soon after, Rooney resigned.

Rooney is now back in the Championship with Birmingham, who parted ways with John Eustace on Monday.

“It is essential that the Board of Directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire Football Club,” the club stated in a statement.

“A new First Team Manager will be announced in the coming days who will be responsible for creating an identity and clear ‘no fear’ playing style that all Birmingham City teams will adopt and embrace.”

Rooney has spent much of his management career attempting to turn around the fortunes of clubs near the bottom of their respective leagues, amassing a victory percentage of just 27.5 in periods with Derby and D.C. United.

He will arrive in Birmingham with the club in a rather good position in the Championship league, sitting sixth.
