AC Milan have reportedly already undertaken the decision to sack head coach Stefano Pioli at the end of the season.

AC Milan to fire Stefano Pioli at the end of the season

Despite his previous allegiances to rivals Inter Milan, Pioli has forged a successful period at San Siro with I Rossoneri.

The team won the 2021-22 Serie A title after winning 129 and losing 51 of 235 matches in all competitions.

Not so long ago, Milan were able to put together a run of seven successive wins in Serie A and the Europa League, supporters optimistic that their side could lift the latter trophy.

However, Milan has subsequently gone on a four-game winless streak, falling 3-1 on aggregate to Roma in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Furthermore, a 3-3 draw against Sassuolo in Serie A was followed by a 2-1 defeat to Inter on Monday night, allowing their rivals to win the title.

AC Milan board decided to make a change in the dugout

Milan remains second in the rankings, 17 points behind Inter, but has a five-point lead over Juventus in the fight for second place.

Nevertheless, according to transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano, the AC Milan board is already looking for appropriate replacements for the 58-year-old.

That is despite CEO Giorgio Furlani “confirming” after the defeat on Monday evening that Pioli was the manager and that the focus was on “ending the season well”.

Milan still has five games to play, including a match against rivals Juventus in Turin on Saturday evening, with a win for either team possibly crucial.

Pellegrini emerges as the unexpected target

Funchales claims that Manuel Pellegrini, the manager of Real Betis, is under consideration as a possible Piolo  substitute.

Given Pellegrini’s age of 70 and his tenure as La Liga manager since 2020, such a move would surprise  many.

Pellegrini has also never coached a team in Italy, with his most famous roles at Villarreal, Real Madrid, Manchester City, and West Ham United.

However, the source adds that Pellegrini’s Italian background (his parents are Italian) make an appointment more likely than it may appear.

The Chilean agreement also appears to feature a termination option that would expire in 2026.
