Before sanctioning a trade for Disasi, Monaco wanted some confidence about a successor. Over the weekend, the club reached an agreement with Southampton for defender Mohammed Salisu.
Axel Disasi to join Chelsea after the deal completes
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said earlier this month that the club would enter the market following Wesley Fofana’s ACL injury.
Fofana underwent knee surgery, and Pochettino stated during Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States that he hoped the player would return from injury at some point this season.
To fill the centre-back positions, Pochettino has a choice of Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, and Benoit Badiashile, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury incurred last season.
As a right-sided centre-back, Disasi will provide Chelsea another alternative. In 2020, he transferred to Monaco from Reims, where he had spent four years. There he made three appearances for France in the 2022 World Cup.
He is likely to become Chelsea’s third major acquisition of the summer, following the arrivals of strikers Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkuku from Villarreal and RB Leipzig, respectively.
