Douglas Luiz | Arsenal's Major Target for January

Arsenal have reportedly entered a bidding war for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz in the January transfer window, with the Gunners making the player their first-choice target.

The 25-year-old joined Villans from Manchester City in the summer of 2019 for £15 million, with the goal of playing regular Premier League football for the first time in his career.

Luiz has played 170 times for the Second City club in four years, scoring 18 goals in all competitions and helping his side reach the Europa Conference League this season.

Since making his debut for Brazil in October 2019, the midfielder has appeared on occasion for the South American giants, earning nine caps.

Douglas Luiz appears to be leaving Aston Villa

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Luiz could leave Aston Villa during the upcoming January transfer window.

According to the report, Arsenal remains very interested in the player, with Mikel Arteta’s side looking to bolster their midfield ranks ahead of the second half of the season.

With former Chelsea man Jorginho’s future uncertain and Thomas Partey currently sidelined due to injury, the North London club are understood to be looking to bring in players for their engine room.

Luiz is believed to be Arsenal’s preferred option at the moment, but Villa are hoping to keep the 25-year-old.

The midfielder’s current contract at Villa Park expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, so Unai Emery’s men are unlikely to lose him for nothing anytime soon.

Luiz has played an important role in Villa’s top-four push this season, starting 11 Premier League games and scoring five goals.

The Brazil international was rested for his team’s Conference League match against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday evening, but he came off the bench to provide the game-winning assist for Ollie Watkins.

Villa’s win over Eredivisie outfit was their third in Group E and has all but secured their place in the knockout stages, meaning Luiz could be rested for the final two group-stage games against Legia Warsaw and Zrinjski Mostar.

When Villa Park hosts Marco Silva’s Fulham on Sunday afternoon, Luiz and his teammates will be looking to avoid back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time this season.
