Edin Dzeko will join Fenerbahce on a free transfer, subject to medical clearance, the Turkish club confirmed.
The 37-year-old began in Inter Milan’s Champions League final encounter with Manchester City. But he was unable to steer the Serie A club to European triumph.
Dzeko’s contract was permitted to expire and a transfer to the Turkish giants has followed where it is anticipated that the striker can steer Fenerbahce to a first Super Lig championship in nine years.
Pictures showed him arriving in Istanbul on Thursday morning with a physical set to follow before putting pen-to-paper on a deal that would keep the striker with the club until 2025.
Edin Dzeko joins Turkish League from Serie A
Dzeko will sign a two-year contract with Fenerbahce and will earn a reputed £3.4million-per-season plus add-ons along with a large sign on fee included given his free agency status.
Moving to Turkey allows the former player City player to continue his run in European competition with Fenerbahce gaining a berth for the Europa Conference League qualifications, that they hope will blossom into a group stage position.
It appears that Dzeko had the choice to stay at Inter longer. Later, he decided that he wanted to play in a place where he had never encountered a challenge before.
On social media, the club confirmed the signing of the prolific striker, writing: ‘To inform. Edin Dzeko, the world’s most famous striker, will go to Istanbul to complete health tests and finalize transfer negotiations. We make it available to the public.’
Dzeko scored 14 goals in 52 appearances for Inter last season, helping the club win the Italian Cup and reach the Champions League final under Simone Inzaghi.
Dzeko’s goal-scoring ability has seen him strike the back of the net 323 times during stints at seven different teams.
His contract in Italy will expire at the end of June, forcing the Italian club to find a new attack partner for Lautaro Martinez.
Romelu Lukaku, who was cut from Mauricio Pochettino’s team for the next season and returned to Chelsea after his loan period at Inter expired, is one potential replacement.
