England Reach the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals

England advanced to the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals. The Lioness defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout, despite Lauren James earning a red card during normal time.

Chloe Kelly scored the game-winning penalty for England, which will face either Colombia or Jamaica in the round of 16.

England 0-0 Nigeria (4-2 penalty shootout): Women’s World Cup 2023 last 16.

England is severely lacking going into overtime after Lauren James received a red card for acting violently. With 87 minutes remaining, James, a standout of the group stage, purposefully stomped on Michelle Alozie.

After discussing with VAR officials, Borjas flashed a red card after the referee initially gave Michelle Alozie a yellow card.

Nigeria had been the better side before the dismissal, hitting the crossbar twice through Ashleigh Plumptre and Uchenna Kanu, while Rachel Daly squandered England’s greatest chance, her close-range header drawing a fine save from Chiamaka Nnadozie.

When Rasheedat Ajibade challenged England’s Daly earlier, Borjas pointed to the spot. But the Honduran referee later decided there was no infraction after reviewing the film.
