Arsenal wins the FA Community Shield 2023

Arsenal won the Community Shield in penalties against Manchester City, 4-1. Gunners got the chance after Leandro Trossard equalized in the 101st minute of normal time.

Treble-winners City appeared to be on track to win their fourth trophy of the season after Cole Palmer’s stunning curling strike put them ahead on 77 minutes. Instead, they suffer a third consecutive loss in the Community Shield.

When the game went to penalties, Kevin De Bruyne hit the crossbar with his attempt. Rodri had his attempt saved after Trossard’s last-ditch effort was deflected in off Manuel Akanji.

Martin Odegaard, Trossard, Bukayo Saka, and Fabio Vieira scored for the Gunners in the season opener to raise their spirits. The Gunners were also perfect from 12 yards out.

Arsenal beat Manchester City

Arsenal had enough of positives in the first half. They should have led at the break after new acquisition Kai Havertz wasted two fantastic chances.

Jurrien Timber and £105 million man Declan Rice also put in strong displays, with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale coming up big late to keep them in the game and set up the grandstand climax.

Palmer’s opener was unaffected with a brilliant strike into the far corner after a wonderful break from Phil Foden.

Palmer, the England U21 Euros winner, appears to be poised for a good season.

However, Arsenal, who were beaten by City in last season’s Premier League title race, battled deep into stoppage time to earn their reward, and will hope that this can serve as a springboard for another battle with Pep Guardiola’s side for the major prizes that will be awarded at the end of the season.

More about Community Shield

Arsenal has won the Community Shield for the 17th time, tying Manchester United (21), and going ahead of Liverpool (16).

Manchester City is the second team to lose the Community Shield in three years in a row, following Manchester United, who lost four in a row from 1998 to 2001.
