Enzo Fernandez accepts Chelsea’s offer as the Blues plan a massive transfer for the midfielder valued at €120 million from Benfica.
Enzo Fernandez has agreed to join Chelsea
Chelsea have opened talks with Benfica about the transfer of Enzo Fernandez, who has agreed to move to Stamford Bridge.
The midfielder shone for Argentina as Lionel Messi led the team to World Cup glory earlier this month in Qatar.
Fernandez, 21, was already on the radar of top European clubs prior to his World Cup performances, but his performances have cemented his status as one of the world’s brightest midfield talents.
Liverpool and Manchester United have both expressed interest in Fernandez, but have been swayed by Benfica’s insistence that he will only be sold if a club activates his £106 million release clause.
Chelsea, however, have persuaded the Argentine to join them after informally contacting him.
They believe they can use Fernandez’s agreement to negotiate a lower price, and Chelsea are now in active talks with Benfica.
Graham Potter has identified midfield as an area in desperate need of investment, given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.
Despite a £300 million summer spending spree, Todd Boehly has promised Potter more funds following the Blues’ shaky start to the season.
