Frenkie de Jong was taken off the pitch on a stretcher in the first half of Barcelona’s match against Real Madrid
Frenkie de Jong was stretchered off with what appeared to be a significant ankle injury near the conclusion of the first half of Real Madrid’s Clásico against Barcelona at the Bernabéu.
De Jong was injured while competing for a loose ball with Madrid’s Valverde. Their feet clashed in midair, sending De Jong’s foot flying back from the impact on his instep, awkwardly twisting the foot and appearing to damage the ankle.
The Dutch player was treated on the field and ultimately got to his feet, but he was unable to walk off and was placed on a stretcher and transported off the field. He was plainly disturbed and crying. The ailment affects the same ankle that he injured earlier this season.
As De Jong was stretchered off, the Bernabéu gave him an ovation.
Substitution for De Jong
Pedri was brought in as a replacement for the wounded De Jong.
So far, Barcelona has not released a report on De Jong’s injury, but the word coming out of the Barcelona dressing room is not positive. He may miss the rest of the season, and his participation in the European Championships is uncertain. The medical report is not expected until Monday.
