Hakan Calhanoglu believes he is the best midfielder in the world, even better than Manchester City’s Rodri.
Calhanoglu has probably been one of Europe’s top midfielders, despite playing in a deep midfield position. He has been playing that role since Marcelo Brozovic joined the team last season, but he has only risen in stature since then, impressing in recent weeks and more.
His performances in the role have just lately received recognition, and Calhanoglu spoke with DAZN (via La Gazzetta dello Sport) about his role in the club and how he has developed his skill set.
He said, when asked about the top midfielders in the world, “Fifth Enzo Fernandez, fourth Kimmich, third Kroos, second Rodri, first I. Why am I the best? Because I score goals, others do not. According to the statistics, I never score from close range, but rather from 25-30 meters or with a free kick. These are challenging things. Then everyone is brilliant at managing, but I dislike making passes from five meters away.”
He went on to say, “This doesn’t mean I shouldn’t improve because now my opponents will try to mark me man for man, as they did in the first half in Rome when I was struggling. I need to establish more space for myself and be more sensible in these circumstances, but with Barella and Mkhitaryan by my side, I’ll get better and better.
Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are thriving, and they recently assisted the team to a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, with Barella impressing when Marko Arnautovic scored the winner.
