James Maddison will not attend Euro 2024.
According to sources, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones have been left out of England’s 26-man team for the European Championship in Germany this summer.
They are the first two of seven players that manager Gareth Southgate will remove from his provisional 33-man roster before UEFA’s Friday submission deadline. According to ESPN sources, Jarell Quansah is also likely to miss the cut.
Maddison came off the bench during Monday’s 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at St. James’ Park. He was in England’s World Cup squad for Qatar in 2022. However, the midfielder did not play.
He was forced to retire from the Euro 2024 qualifiers in November owing to an ankle injury suffered during Spurs’ 4-1 home defeat to London rivals Chelsea.
Previously, Madison had three goals and five assists in 11 Tottenham appearances after joining from Leicester City in June. The midfielder has struggled to return to his early-season form since returning from an injury at the end of January. As of March 10, he has only scored one Premier League goal against Aston Villa.
Before England plays Iceland at Wembley Stadium on Friday night at midnight, the final squad will be announced.
England begins their competition against Serbia on June 16 before facing Slovenia and Denmark in the group round.
