Jérémy Doku has joined Manchester City

Manchester City have completed the transfer of Belgian winger Jérémy Doku from Rennes for £55.5 million, the Premier League winners have confirmed.

The 21-year-old has joined the triple champions on a five-year contract, becoming their third major acquisition of the summer transfer season. City accepted an offer for the player earlier this week, and the paperwork have been finalised during the last few days.

“This is a fantastic day for me, both personally and professionally,” Doku remarked. Manchester City are the best team in the world, so joining them is a dream come true for me and my family.

“I am a young player with a lot to learn and improve on.” Working with [manager] Pep [Guardiola and his staff, as well as playing alongside these world-class players, will help me improve as a player significantly. That is something I am certain of.

“Watching City last season was incredible. The treble is the most difficult feat in football, and they accomplished it. You have no idea how thrilling it is to be a part of this team. I’m excited to get started. Hopefully, I’ll be able to please the supporters.”

Doku progressed through the Anderlecht junior system before joining Rennes in 2020. He earned his international debut in 2018 and played in both Euro 2020 and last year’s World Cup. He is known for his speed and dribbling ability.

“I am quick, strong, and I like to dribble,” he explained. Those are the skills on which I prefer to rely. I believe that the way I dribble and my speed are assets that I can bring to the team. Of course, the group already has a lot of excellent players.
“However, I believe I can contribute something to the group,” he added.

Doku joins Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic, who arrived earlier this summer. Matheus Nunes and Eberechi Eze, two midfielders are also in link to the club, although no moves have been finalized.

Guardiola’s midfield resources have been weakened as a result of the losses of Ilkay Gündogan and Riyad Mahrez this summer, while Doku’s international teammate, Kevin De Bruyne, is expected to be sidelined for several months due to injury.

The city’s football director, Txiki Begiristain, said, “Jérémy is a very exciting young player, and I’m delighted he’s joining us.”In terms of raw abilities, he possesses everything a winger requires.

“He has an exceptional pace and is exceptional in one-on-one situations.”

He will become a world-class attacking player working with Pep and the City coaching staff, in my opinion.
