Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo is likely to join Bayern Munich on loan. The Bundesliga giants have agreed to a deal that will see the Portuguese fullback sign for the German side until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old Premier League superstar may join Bayern for the remainder of the season. Cancelo having recently lost his starting XI spot in the City squad due to the breakthrough of Rico Lewis.

The defender joined City from Juventus in 2019 for a reported £60 million. He is known as one of the world’s best fullbacks.. Cancelo, however, has struggled to gain regular minutes under Pep Guardiola’s side since the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Thus, it is leading to this loan move to Bayern.

The Bavarian club is no stranger to signing big-name players on loan, with James Rodriguez and Phillipe Coutinho both spending a year at the club, and Cancelo is the latest superstar to join the German champions on a season-long loan.

Indeed, with Cancelo in need of minutes and Guardiola seemingly content with his current options. Loaning the defender to Bayern makes sense on paper. Especially with Julian Nagelsmann’s side in desperate need of a spark to kick-start their Bundesliga title defense.

Even though City have the deepest squad of any club in Europe’s top five leagues, allowing a player like Cancelo. But Cancelo is likely to leave on loan is a risk. Thus, that could backfire on Guardiola if a fullback suffers an injury in the coming weeks.

As previously stated, Joao Cancelo is arguably the best fullback in the world on his day, and with City now sending the defender out to Bayern, Guardiola will be praying to the injury gods that none of Lewis, Nathan Ake, or Kyle Walker are injured.
