Maurizio Sarri resigns as Lazio boss

Lazio have stated that Maurizio Sarri has resigned as head coach.

The former Chelsea and Juventus manager retires after a terrible four-game losing streak that saw the Biancocelesti eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich and suffer three consecutive Serie A defeats to AC Milan, Fiorentina, and Udinese.

Following Monday’s 2-1 home loss to the latter, which dropped Lazio to ninth in the Serie A league, eight points behind fifth-placed Roma and 11 behind fourth-placed Bologna, Sarri reportedly announced his resignation on Tuesday morning.

The 65-year-old took out his locker at Lazio’s training field with the idea that his resignation would be accepted by president Claudio Lotito, who has actually approved his departure.

Giovanni Martusciello, Sarri’s long-time assistant at Lazio, Juventus, and Empoli, will take over as his successor.

Maurizio Sarri quits the role of Head Coach from S.S. Lazio

“SS Lazio announces that Maurizio Sarri has resigned as head coach of the first team,” the club stated. “The Company expresses gratitude to the technician for the goals accomplished and the work completed, and wishes him the best of luck in both his personal and professional life. At the same time, the Club announces that Giovanni Martusciello will provide technical guidance.

After Simone Inzaghi left for Inter Milan in 2021, Sarri, who had been out of work since leaving Juventus in the summer of 2020, took over at Stadio Olimpico, and his contract was extended until 2025 after only one year in the role.

The Italian leaves with a record of 65 wins, 30 draws, and 42 defeats in 137 matches across all competitions, averaging 1.64 points per game, but he did not win any silverware during his tenure.

Sarri guided Lazio to second place in the 2022-23 Serie A season, trailing only Napoli, earning the Biancocelesti a position in January’s four-team Supercoppa Italiana, although they were defeated 3-0 by Inter Milan in the semi-finals.

Five of the Italian’s past six games in command of the club have ended in defeat, but his deputy Martusciello will remain as Lazio’s new manager, his second top post after a year at Empoli in 2016-17.

The 52-year-old won just nine of his 40 games in charge of Empoli, who were relegated from the top flight that year, before leaving to become a technical coach for Inter Milan under Luciano Spalletti.
