Newcastle United announce Joelinton's contract extension

The 27-year-old has become a fan favourite after joining Newcastle from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for a then-club-record £40 million in the summer of 2019.

Joelinton came at St James’ Park as a striker and had limited success in front of goal, but he has since developed into an all-round midfielder under manager Eddie Howe’s supervision.

The Brazil international, who won his first cap in June of last year, has made 179 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and giving 15 assists.

The Brazilian was an important part of the Magpies’ Premier League top-four finish, Champions League qualification, and EFL Cup final appearance last season, scoring eight goals in 40 games.

Joelinton has three goals and four assists in 23 games this season, but he has been out since January with a thigh injury that necessitated surgery, and he is racing against the clock to return before the season ends.

Joelinton: ‘I love playing for Newcastle’

Newcastle United is thrilled to announce Joelinton’s New long-term deal at St James’ Park

Earlier this year, there were reports that Newcastle may attempt to trade Joelinton this summer if they couldn’t agree on a new contract for the midfielder.

Joelinton’s initial contract had only 18 months remaining to run, but the Magpies have now confirmed that the Brazilian has signed a new long-term contract, the length of which has yet to be divulged.

Joelinton told Newcastle’s official website after signing his new contract, “I feel fantastic. I am really happy, and so is my family. A lot has happened during my time here.

“I’ve learned and matured a lot, and coming to Newcastle was the best decision of my career.

“I adore playing for the club. I love the club and the fans. We had numerous debates, and I always wanted to be here. I’m happy to continue, and I expect to be successful in the coming years.”

Howe continued, “This has been a top priority for us off the pitch.”
“I’m overjoyed Joelinton has committed his future to the club.”

“Joey is a fantastic player and person, and his love for the club is shared by everyone here. He contributes distinct qualities to the group and surely strengthens us.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in bringing this to a successful and timely completion. We are very glad to watch Joelinton wear the Newcastle shirt for many years to come.”

Joelinton is expected to return from injury sometime in May, when Newcastle have five Premier League games remaining.

The Magpies are currently eighth in the Premier League, one point behind seventh-placed West Ham, who have one game remaining.
