The former Chelsea and Southampton player Oriol Romeu’s contract now includes a £400 million (£347 million) release clause.

Catalan-born Romeu spent some time in the Espanyol academy before joining the Barcelona development team and making his Pep Guardiola debut in 2011.

A transfer to Chelsea followed months later, but it was with Southampton that he established himself as a Premier League regular, making 256 games in a seven-year spell at St Mary’s before leaving in 2022.

Romeu was a regular for Girona last season and will now play for Barcelona under former teammate Xavi.
