Premier League Clubs transfer window Spending

Premier League clubs spent £100 million in the January 2024 transfer window. This is the lowest Premier League gross transfer expenditure since January 2012 (£60 million), excepting the January 2021 window (£70 million), when activities were hampered by COVID 19.

Despite this, Premier League teams’ total seasonal investment of £2.5 billion in 2023/24 is the second highest ever, trailing only the 2022/23 season (£2.7 billion).

Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, stated: “After record-breaking spending in the previous three transfer windows, Premier League clubs’ spending this January has been modest.

The more careful approach is most likely motivated by the high amount of spending during the summer window. However, it could also be affected by a greater understanding of the Premier League’s financial restrictions and the potential consequences of noncompliance.

Securing top-tier player talent is critical for Premier League clubs, but this window has shown that retention has taken precedence over attraction.”

Premier League Clubs | Dramatic Fall in January Transfer Window

The Premier League has not had the biggest transfer expenditure of any league in the world since 2019, when it was surpassed by the Chinese Super League.

It is also the first time since the summer of 2011, when Serie A spent €565 million, that the Premier League has not been the top spending league in Europe.

Similarly, breaking prior trends, Premier League clubs at the top and bottom spent less than they did previously.

At the completion of the spending window, the total transfer expenditure among the three clubs in the relegation zone was £2 million (by one club), compared to the almost £130 million spent by two of the three clubs in the same situation in January 2023.

Similarly, only one of the top three teams in the table spent in January, putting the total spend among this group to £15 million, compared to £110 million in the 2023 January transfer window.
