Quincy Promes sentenced Six Years in Prison

According to public broadcaster NOS, an Amsterdam court condemned the former Netherlands and Ajax Amsterdam star in absentia for smuggling at least 1,350 kilos (2,976 pounds) of cocaine via Belgium’s Antwerp port in 2020.

According to NOS, telephone taps revealed Promes’ direct involvement in cocaine trafficking, citing court documents.

Another suspect received the same sentence.

Promes, 32, currently plays for the Russian football team Spartak Moscow.

According to his defense team, Promes denied the charges, but the judge issued an arrest warrant.

Promes has previously played for the Dutch powerhouse Ajax and the Spanish club Sevilla.

Promes was not present, but was in Moscow, where he presently plays for Russian Premier League club Spartak Moscow. It is unknown whether the penalty would have an influence on his contract with the club, which runs until June.

In a separate case, Promes was sentenced to 18 months in prison in June for stabbing his cousin at a family gathering near Amsterdam three years ago, but he has yet to serve the sentence. He has spent a significant amount of time in Russia since his imprisonment last year, playing 21 games for Spartak this season.

Promes was formerly a regular part of the Netherlands national team, earning 50 caps. He previously played for Sevilla and Ajax before rejoining Spartak in 2021 for his second stint with the Russian club.
