Recce James: Chelsea has named defender Reece James as its new captain for the 2023-24 season.
| Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure earlier this summer created a vacancy in the squad, and it has now been confirmed that James will wear the captain’s armband next season.

The 23-year-old came up through Chelsea’s development system and has gone on to represent the club’s first squad on 147 occasions in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and registering 20 assists.
Last season, the England international made only 24 appearances, missing a number of games due to knee and hamstring injuries.
“A boyhood Blues supporter who joined our academy when he was six years old, Reece was the club’s standout choice to lead us on and off the pitch this season,” said a statement on Chelsea’s official website.
“I’m overjoyed to take on the role and responsibility,” James added. “I know I have big shoes to fill because we’ve had big captains here before, but I’m excited.”
“I’ve spent almost my entire life at Chelsea.” I started here when I was six years old, and getting through the academy is difficult. But to continue on and become captain is a fantastic experience for me and my family.”
Mauricio Pochettino, the new Blues manager, said, “This is a decision made by myself and the club.”

“He sets a good example, and his attitude and commitment to Chelsea have been evident throughout pre-season.” During our summer tour, he proudly wore the armband and will take on the challenge of leading our group with his own attitude and ideas.”

Meanwhile, new Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino stated, “This is a decision made by myself and the club.” We are thrilled that Reece James will captain the team this season.

In a joint statement, co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said, “Reece’s connection with Chelsea has been forged over 17 years.” He is aware of the club’s traditions as well as the duties that come with being captain.
“He knows the standards required to win at this club – both from his time in the Academy and the first team – and it’s a very proud moment for Reece and everyone connected to the club.”
It seems that Brazilian center defense player Thiago Silva, a seasoned veteran, was James’ toughest competition for the team captaincy.
Chelsea finished their pre-season training for the 2023-24 season with a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on August 2.
The Blues are now set to kick off their Premier League campaign against Liverpool at home on Sunday afternoon.
