Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min scored late in the Lilywhites’ 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United in North London, joining an elite group of Premier League players.
The South Korean international appeared to be in pain following Thursday’s home defeat to West Ham United, raising fears that he would be forced to miss the visit of the Magpies, but he was given the all-clear to play at the weekend.
Prior to the visit of Newcastle, Tottenham had taken the lead in five consecutive Premier League games but failed to win any of them, setting a new competition record, taking only one point from a possible 15.
Spurs drew first blood in North London once more through Destiny Udogie, who received Son’s cutback and scored his first-ever Premier League goal for Tottenham, who were punished for failing to extend their lead against West Ham in midweek.
Richarlison doubled Spurs’ lead before the break, netting a top-flight goal with his feet for the first time in Tottenham colours, and he later doubled his tally on the hour mark.
With only five minutes remaining in normal time, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was penalized for bringing down Son, who dusted himself off and slotted home his side’s fourth of the evening to put the icing on the cake.
In added time, Joelinton managed to break Tottenham’s clean sheet, but the Brazilian’s strike did little to dampen the hosts’ joy, and Son also joined an exclusive club by stroking home from 12 yards.
The 31-year-old’s penalty was his 10th Premier League goal of the season, marking the eighth year in a row that he has scored in double figures in the Premier League.
Son Heung-Min made a Historic Record
Only six players have scored 10 or more goals in at least eight consecutive seasons, with Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney doing so 11 years in a row and Frank Lampard doing so in ten.
Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane have each scored 10+ goals in nine consecutive Premier League seasons, while Thierry Henry and Sadio Mane join Son in the eight-year club.
